Heathers movie essay

The main colors in the movie are red and blue; everything in Heather C’s house is accented red, and she’s even lit red at the Remington party (thanks to the fire accidentally set by Veronica, as she sits bathed in blue light).

The only modern high-school comedy that approaches a similarly bleak outcome is Alexander Payne’s Election, and even then the students emerge relatively unscathed. Heathers ’ most influential character is JD, an anti-hero so cruel that he's uncomfortable to watch.

I approach "Heathers" as a traveler in an unknown country, one who does not speak the language or know the customs and can judge the natives only by taking them at their word. The movie is a morbid comedy about peer pressure in high school, about teenage suicide and about the deadliness of cliques that not only exclude but also maim and kill.

Heathers, on the other hand, is a movie that made a huge impact on my life. The 1988 black comedy, which effectively killed the ‘80s teen genre (along with Heather Chandler, Kurt and Ram), was about so much more than high school, popularity, and Christian Slater’s hair.
